Gatsby Charitable Foundation
Supports improvement in educational opportunity in the UK for a workforce which can better apply technology for wealth creation; and encourages effective technology transfer from universities and other research centres to productive industry.
The Gatsby Foundation is one of the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts which share a common administration. The Trustees are also advised by consultants with appropriate expertise.
They support a number of programmes for charitable activity which they hope may make life better for people, especially those who are disadvantaged.
Summary of Technical Education programmes
to encourage good teaching and good materials in schools in mathematics, science and technology as an essential prerequisite to the health of the manufacturing base;
to encourage appropriate IT development which will enhance mathematics, science and technology in schools;
to ensure that the courses and the awards are respected and valued by industry, parents and students;
to encourage the most able technologists to enter manufacturing industry both at professional and technician level; and
to encourage technology transfer between universities and industry.
The Trustees have established a separate charity, Gatsby Technical Education Projects (GTEP), to develop and manage a range of projects designed to enrich and enhance learning and teaching through:
subject support for initial teacher training courses;
professional development for teachers in science, mathematics and technology; and
curriculum support materials.
